Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choose the right firewood for cleaner flues and better efficiency.
Hardwoods vs. Softwoods
Burning hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory can help keep your flue cleaner. These woods burn hotter and longer, producing less creosote than softwoods.
Softwoods, while easier to ignite, tend to create more smoke and creosote, leading to buildup in the flue. Hardwoods, while denser, require a longer season to dry but offer cleaner burns.
Proper Seasoning
Ensure that your firewood is properly seasoned for at least six months to a year. Well-seasoned wood has a moisture content below 20%, which helps reduce smoke and creosote formation.
To test for proper seasoning, look for cracks in the ends of the wood, listen for a hollow sound when two pieces are struck together, and use a moisture meter for accuracy.
Storage Tips
Store firewood in a dry, ventilated area off the ground to prevent moisture absorption. Cover the top of the pile, leaving the sides open for airflow.
Stack your wood in a single row, spaced away from structures to allow proper ventilation. This setup helps in maintaining low moisture levels for efficient burning.
